On October 10th we hosted an online event about the evaluation of our Transition Policy Advice 1.0: ‘Transition to non-animal research’. The Transition Policy Advice 1.0, published in 2016, addressed options for phasing out animal testing and promoting animal-free innovations. In our recent evaluation, we analyzed the progress on the goals and ambitions from this report and published our findings in our advisory report: Evaluation of the NCad advisory report: ‘Transition to non-animal research’. The evaluation can be found here.
Our evaluation identified seven themes that have been decisive for the support and perception of the Transition Policy Advice 1.0 by stakeholders and the implementation of the recommendations. These include the international context, funding, and cultural and economic aspects (Values). We conclude that progress has been made in the transition but that drivers have not been sufficiently exploited, barriers have not been sufficiently removed and fundamental changes are needed in order to achieve the set goals. We also conclude that a reassessment of the starting principles of the Transition Policy Advice 1.0 is necessary as a result of new insights, for example from the field of transition sciences and animal ethics.
Based on our findings and concepts, we want to start a broad discussion on the future of the transition to animal-free research. The feedback and insights from this discussion will be an important source of input for the new NCad policy advice on the transition to a society without animal experiments, the Transition Policy Advice 2.0, which is planned for 2025.
Thie event and the upcoming stakeholder consultations is for everyone directly or indirectly involved in the transition to a society without animal experiments.
The event was in English because of the international context of the transition.
