“Over the past few decades, numerous tests have been developed to assess the potential risks of substances such as medicines and food. Most of these procedures involve the use of laboratory animals. The range of animal procedures can be seen as the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. We must first complete the puzzle before we can see the picture. In this metaphor, the picture represents insight into the safety of the substance in question. In seeking solutions for the Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of animal procedures (3Rs), scientists have – for many years – been attempting to replace the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle with new pieces. But there are a lot of pieces to this particular puzzle, and it would take forever to replace all those pieces with perfectly fitting new pieces. We now know that it is much more efficient to create a new puzzle, one with a much clearer picture. In-depth knowledge of the human genetic blueprint (and the resulting insight into numerous bodily functions) has resulted in an exponential increase in our understanding of all sorts of processes in our body. Along with new computer-generated meta-analyses, the new jigsaw puzzle is starting to take shape: this is really going to work!”
